Clinical Rotations for Health Professions Students / Residents
The North Central AHEC offers a variety of off-site clinical experiences for medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy and allied health students and residents at a variety of sites in the 16-county region. Clinical sites that are rural or underserved (according to federal standards) qualify for the AHEC stipend (see information below about housing / food allowances).
The North Central AHEC coordinates the placement of health professions students and residents from the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine in off-campus clinical education experiences. In addition, health professionsl students from other Kentucky colleges and universities will be accommodated when possible. These clinical rotations take place in private practices, community health centers, and area hospitals. Area physicians and health professionals serve as community-based faculty during these rotations supervising, teaching and guiding students and residents through the clinical experiences.

Benefits of an Off-Campus AHEC Rotation
The off-campus rotation will provide you with a one-to-one teaching relationship with a community-based faculty member, with more individualized teaching and usually a more independent practice. Many factors, such as the personality of the preceptor, training, culture, and local resources determine how health care is provided. An AHEC off-campus rotation gives the student / resident an opportunity to compare health care delivery and practices in different areas of the state.
We hope your rural or urban underserved rotation will positively influence your decision about where / how to practice your profession, especially as it relates to rural and/or urban underserved areas. By living and working in a particular community, you will obtain a better understanding of community needs as they relate to your profession.
